Girls soccer polls: Fairport at No. 1 for now

For an idea of how young, deep and talented Fairport’s girls soccer team is, consider forward Claire Myers.

Myers led Fairport with 11 goals last season as a freshman. She is among a group of freshmen and sophomores who can be a nice fit for a team that includes seniors Megan Konieczny and Caroline DeLong, 2014 Monroe County league all-stars.

Coaches in Section V seem to think so, and awarded the Red Raiders the top spot in the season’s first Democrat and Chronicle large-school poll. Well, at least for now in a season where three or four schools could end up in the No. 1 spot within the month.

“If you look, you have a ton of parity across (Class) AA,” Webster Schroeder coach Kent Brown said. “A lot of teams have players who play club soccer.

“It’s just a year where there’s no overpowering team.”

If you look, you have a ton of parity across (Class) AA … It’s just a year where there’s no overpowering team.

The Fairport Red Raiders, sectional semifinalists in Class AA last season, are short of a polished product. Fairport coach Tom Natalie will tell you that, as the Red Raiders have lost back-to-back games after a strong start.

“We’re not playing great,” Natalie said before the team’s recent losses. “We’re still trying to figure out formations and other things, but to be 3-1 and still figuring that out we’re happy about that.”

The Red Raiders are 3-3 now after losses to Victor and Spencerport, the No. 6 and No. 2 teams in the large-school rankings, respectively. Fairport’s other loss was to No. 3 Schroeder, after the Warriors scored a goal off a corner kick and another on a direct kick.

“They moved and played as a group,” Natalie said.

That could come for the Red Raiders with time, starting with the defense.

Myers was a first-team league all-star last year along with Konieczny and DeLong. Konieczny, a forward, was second on the 2014 Fairport team with eight goals. DeLong does her best work as a back, in front of freshman goalie Claire Mulholland, who played 1,208 minutes last season as an eighth-grader.

Sophomore midfielder Zoe Janes scored twice during Fairport’s season-opening win over Churchville-Chili. Dori Rizzo, a freshman forward with a goal this year, was the leading scorer on the undefeated 2014 Fairport JV team. Fairport’s freshman team lost one game.

“We’ve changed over a lot from last year,” Natalie said about seven underclassmen who play for the Red Raiders. “There are probably two more on JV who could be good players and may contribute in the near future.”

Here are five other things to watch in Section V girls soccer this fall:

Webster Schroeder's Rachel Wengender, right, during last season's sectionals, is one of the Warriors sure to provide a boost to the team after recovering from an injury.

Webster Schroeder’s Rachel Wengender, right, during last season’s sectionals, is one of the Warriors sure to provide a boost to the team after recovering from an injury.

The goal is more goals: The good news for the Webster Schroeder Warriors is they are off to a 2-1-2 start.

Class AA semifinalists last season, the Warriors can stay with Fairport (win), Victor (2-1 win, Sept. 8) and No. 4 Penfield (0-0, Sept. 10). Those results are without junior Maddy Lowe, a 2014 Democrat and Chronicle All-Greater Rochester forward. Lowe is in the United States Soccer’s under-17 national team pool.

“We’re strong defensively,” Brown said. “We’re just having trouble scoring in the flow of the game. We’re going to get better.”

One hope at Schroeder is that sophomore midfielder/defender Rachel Wengender (hamstring), plus senior defenders Lauren Collins (broken wrist) and Becky Greenway (sprained knee) are able to return from injuries during the next two weeks. There are also a pool of players who can help the Warriors off the bench, when they see action.

Monroe County all-star Sarah Lefrois and defensive midfielder Lily Stowell are two reasons why the Warriors have allowed two goals in five games. Schroeder’s midfield also includes Francesca Lee, who has committed to play at Stony Brook University.

Linked “rivals” I: Pittsford Mendon and Pittsford Sutherland have identical records.

No. 9 Mendon is the reigning Class A sectional champion. The Vikings lost two AGR players to graduation, defender Emily Sullivan and midfielder/forward Shannon Miller, but have another back, senior midfielder/forward Abbey Leon, who is described as the team’s playmaker.

Hannah Sertl with two, is the leader among six goal scorers during a 4-1-1 start for Mendon. The Vikings’ recent victories include a 3-1 win over Sutherland.

The Sutherland Knights, led by Grace Allen (four goals), Grace Dunnigan (three) and Annie Hanna (three), have established they can put balls into the net at a good rate. The rematch with Mendon is Oct. 8.

Linked “rivals” II: Greece Arcadia played at No. 10 Greece Athena on Sept. 14.

Will that game be a signal the Arcadia Titans are poised to take a step or two forward from a 7-10-1 season last fall? Arcadia has a 1-0 win over Mendon in the bank.

Senior defender Makayla Binter was a first-team Monroe County league all-star, while senior forward Colby Kutzer, who had three goals and three assists through Sunday, and junior midfielder Alexis Couture could be future honorees.

Athena can count a 1-0 result over Webster Schroeder among its good wins, and maybe its matchup against Arcadia. Senior co-captain midfielder/defender Noelle Colilli has scored half of Athena’s eight goals during a 3-2 start for the Trojans.

It’s difficult to overlook Greece Odyssey, as the Leopards were 1-0 winners over Arcadia on their way to winning the Hilton tournament. The 2014 Section V Class B co-champions have seven starters back.

Linked “rivals” III: Mercy is one of those teams clearly reshaped by graduations, including AGR midfielder Amanda Mietus, a five-year varsity player.

Mary LoCiero and Anna Doerr, two more reliable 2014 starters, also are now in college.

“Everyone on the team is really adjusting to new positions,” Mercy coach Donna Trost said.

The Monarchs may be a lot stronger next month, if everyone settles in and are productive. Senior forward Kristen Smith has done well going from substitute to starter and that could be a big help for 2014 leading scorer Emily Wade, who scored 15 goals with seven assists last season as a junior.

“Aquinas has fast and physical players,” Trost said. “I think no one pays attention to Aquinas, but they are going to be right there in there with everyone else in (Class A).”

Aquinas, co-champions in Class B with Odyssey, and Mercy played to a 1-1 tie Sept. 8.

Home of power Rangers?: A move from Class AA into Class A guaranteed nothing for the Spencerport Rangers, but the coaches in our poll put the Monroe County league team very near to the top.

The Rangers (5-0) are No. 2 in the large-school rankings, one point behind Fairport, after Spencerport received the most first-place votes.

Seven players at Spencerport have scored, led by freshmen Leah Wengender (five goals) and Erin Coykendall, (four). Luca Fahmer, a sophomore, has stood out with Wengender in the midfield.

Spencerport’s wins include a 4-1 result over Athena and 2-0 over Fairport, but the schedule ramps up in difficulty during the next 10 days. The Rangers play at Webster Schroeder on Sept. 19 and host No. 6 Victor Sept.24.

“We’ve been on the weaker side, I don’t think we’ve been in a (sectional) final since 2009,” Spencerport coach Jamie Schneider said. “We take it one game at a time, but we are excited.”

The Rush-Henrietta and Pittsford offenses seemed capable of scoring as many points as each unit wanted during the first two weeks of the high school football season.

Not much changed when Pittsford faced Rush-Henrietta on Saturday.

Yet, it was the defense of the Panthers who made just enough stops to ensure that Pittsford won 36-33 after Josh Mack ran for four touchdowns during Rush-Henrietta’s homecoming game.

“I feel great after this game,” Mack said. “It was a hard-fought game, we were down for awhile, going into the fourth quarter. We fought back and kept our composure.”

Mack got away from Rush-Henrietta’s defense for a 53-yard touchdown run with 2:16 remaining. A conversion pass thrown by Robby Kleinhammer to Riley Cott then turned Pittsford’s lead into three points. The Monroe County Division I game remained entertaining and interesting, when Rush-Henrietta senior Reggie Robinson returned the ensuing kickoff to the Pittsford 35-yard line.

The Royal Comets (2-1) moved six yards closer to reaching the end zone again, but then went backward. A pass on fourth down over the middle of the field fell incomplete. Pittsford improved to 3-0 after it ran the final 25 seconds off the scoreboard clock.

“We had a couple of negative plays on second down (during key drives),” Rush-Henrietta coach Joe Montesano said. “They are not a team you want to be in third and long.”

Mack finished with 193 yards on 22 carries. The 2014 Democrat and Chronicle All-Greater Rochester running back also scored on runs of 30, 12 and 5, in addition to his go-ahead run during the fourth quarter. Kleinhammer, a 6 foot-3 inch, 220-pound sophomore, connected with Alec Vaules for a 63-yard touchdown pass play in the third.

“There are just so many weapons,” Rush-Henrietta coach Joe Montesano said. “I think they are hard to defend and I think we are hard to defend.”

Rush-Henrietta quarterback Jared Gerbino, another member of the 2014 AGR team, threw four touchdown passes, three to senior classmate Joseph Ortiz and a 60-yarder to Robinson near the Pittsford sideline. Gerbino was 8 of 18 passing for 253 yards and was intercepted once by Vaules, plus he ran for 61 yards on 17 carries, including a 10-yard run for a touchdown.

“I mean it’s tough, but it’s not the end of the world,” Gerbino said. “We have a lot of fan support and I think they are proud of us for the way we played.

“We took the ‘L’ but I think we put all of our effort into it, so we did what we could.”

What the Rush-Henrietta Royal Comets did was take a 27-16 lead after the game resumed following a delay for lightning in the area at halftime. Gerbino’s long touchdown throw to Robinson and his 27-yarder to Ortiz came after three-and-out stops by the Rush-Henrietta defense.

Pittsford's Isaiah Brown, right, makes a catch and takes a hit from Rush-Henrietta's Jashaun Smith during regular season game played at Rush-Henrietta High School on Saturday, September 19, 2015. Pittsford beat Rush-Henrietta 36-33.

“We came out after halftime and they took away our inside run game,” Pittsford coach Keith Molinich said. “Our offensive coordinator took care of it and it helped us.”

Mack was a decoy on the move to his right, when Kleinhammer put the ball into the air for a wide-open Vaules to grab and score with 2:07 remaining in the third quarter. The Panthers failed on their two-point conversion attempt, but went ahead 28-27 after Mack’s 30-yard scoring run with 4:59 remaining to play.

Gerbino and Ortiz answered again for Rush-Henrietta just 43 seconds later to go ahead 33-28. Mack hurdled a tackler during one of his three carries on what turned out to be a game-winning drive for Pittsford that included an 11-yard scramble by Kleinhammer.

“Coach (Molinich) knows what he was doing,” Mack said. “He was game-planning. Draw the focus off of me, wear them down and then when I get it, to the house (end zone).

“It’s a big win but also it’s a big measuring stick for us, it’s a big eye-opener to see where we are at and see what we have to work on.”

.

.

Mark Hurley understands it’s a fine line.

Pittsford Mendon’s boys soccer coach knows the nicknames, the jokes and general busting of the chops that he does daily with his players could be taken the wrong way. But there’s a rock-solid reason the 41-year-old can act like he’s still one of the guys and not be worried someone’s feelings being hurt is going to end up with him explaining himself to a parent.

“It’s not just soccer for him. He cares about our life outside of soccer also,” junior defender John Galbraith says. “He tells us if we’re ever in trouble or we have a problem to call him, he’ll be there for us.”

For Hurley, building that bond and a relationship with his players is the key. He’s the next winner of the Coaches Who Care award, a joint initiative by the Democrat and Chronicle and Compeer Rochester that recognizes top coaches in Section V. A 1991 graduate of Greece Athena, Hurley replaced Mendon coaching legend Joe Borrosh 12 years ago. At the time of his retirement, Borrosh’s 498 wins were tops in Section V, and his teams also won 16 Section V titles and a record six state championships.

Mendon soccer was synonymous with winning. Thanks mostly to Hurley it still is. He has guided teams to a pair of state championships and five sectional crowns in his 12 seasons.

“I’m here to make them have fun,” said Hurley, who also played at Monroe Community College after high school. “They love soccer and I don’t at any point put such a stress on them that it’s a job, that it’s work, that it’s a grind. I want them to work but have fun at the same time and enjoy and look forward to coming (to practice) every single day.”

Hence the jokes. Hurley said he feels more like a big brother to his players — OK, maybe at the age of 41 it’s more like an uncle — than their coach. If he ever senses any teasing, coming from him or a teammate, is taken the wrong way, he takes care of it immediately and talks to his players. In a way, he’s trying to teach them it’s OK for teammates and friends to laugh with and at one another if it’s all in good fun and not mean-spirited.

“He’s just a great guy overall. He’s like a friend to all of us. He’s not just our coach,” says senior defender Jim Keneally. “He jokes around a ton. It just keeps us all relaxed. We don’t take it too seriously. We just want to be loose when we’re out there.”

Pittsford Mendon boys varsity soccer coach Mark Hurley always keeps an eye on the action on the field during practice at Hopkins Park in Mendon Tuesday, Sept. 22, 2015.

It’s not fun and games all the time. That’s simply unrealistic, so “if you’re doing something bad, if you’re messing around,” Keneally says, “(Hurley) will take you aside and give it to you straight.”

He learned his values from his parents, Janice and Larry Hurley. “Be consistent. Family first. Do what’s right by others and take care of the ones you love. Just simple values that my Mom and Dad both taught me,” says Hurley, a physical education teacher at Pittsford’s Calkins Road Middle School.

Hurley and his wife, Gina, have two sons: Danny, 10, and Tyler, 7. They’re ball boys for Mendon and Hurley uses their role at matches as another way to teach his players. When he’s busy coaching, he knows his sons might be watching his players on the field or the sideline. How they act and what they might say in certain situations, especially if something doesn’t go Mendon’s way, is influential.

Hurley tells his players to “make sure they’re doing the right thing and being good leaders and role models,” he says.

Mendon is Hurley’s first varsity coaching job. He’d been a junior-varsity head coach at Pittsford Sutherland for three years before Borrosh decided to retire. He says the confidence Borrosh and Borrosh’s JV coach, John Iaculli, showed in him was important to Hurley finding his own way. Even now, he says their friendship resonates with him.

“They continue to support me and know I’m doing it the right way so I appreciate that,” he says.

The Vikings take a 4-2-1 record into Thursday’s Monroe County match at Victor (4-3).

Hurley says Bill Hueber, the former Greece Athena boys varsity coach, helped him fall in love with soccer. Hueber was Hurley’s youth coach from age 10 to 16. MCC coach Nelson Cupello affected him similarly.

“You recognize that every player has value,” Hurley says. “I’ve had 31 (players) on my roster before and that 31st person has as much value as (the player who is) All-State or All-American.”

Some former players who Hurley now calls friends were the guys who didn’t play that much.

“I ski with them, keep in touch with them,” Hurley says, “and some of the most meaningful letters that I’ve ever received, that I can relay to the team (now) about the value and importance of being a team player,” are from those guys.

Henry Burton had the weight room at Pittsford Mendon all to himself about 7 o’clock Wednesday night.

Practice was over for the Mendon boys cross country team, but there was Burton with a big barbell on the back of his neck, as he bent his knees to squat weights. This was a workout to strengthen his legs, actually his second of the day.

About an hour earlier, Burton and his teammates ran up and down “Thornell Hill.”

“It’s the little things that make everyone different from one another,” Burton said. “Every team is doing the same training. Every team is putting in hills.

“Every team is putting in the miles, but it’s what you ask yourself — ‘What other thing am I going to do’ — that’s going to set you apart. And when you have your whole team doing that, the limits just aren’t set anywhere. And you can reach any height you want.’’

The Mendon boys have won the last two Class B state championships, the 2013 title with the late Jason DeJoy as coach. Last season’s champion with coach Chris Compson became the first from Section V to win states without an individual runner among the top 10 finishers. And another run is possible for the Vikings, who are ranked No. 1 among Class B schools in the state by the New York State Sportswriters Association.

Pittsford Mendon XC coach builds on Jason DeJoy’s legacy

Griffin Hess, a senior, classmate Isaac Goodman, Burton, also a senior, and sophomore Nathan Lawler — Mendon’s fastest runners at the 2014 state meet — are once again among the Vikings’ top seven runners.

“A lot of it is attributed to the culture of the program,” Compson said. “My predecessor, Jason DeJoy, established a great culture of commitment and really focusing on the process, rather than the products, knowing that if we’re doing everything right and we’re putting everything in, the end result will follow.”

Compson describes the approach as never getting too hung up on the results. Competition among the runners, and according to Burton and Hess there is plenty, sorts out which Vikings move into the top seven. One reason those spots are tough to occupy is a fruitful modified program, now run by Mike Wahl, who followed the retired Anna Gorbold.

Pittsford Mendon has won state championships in Class B the last two seasons.

Pittsford Mendon has won state championships in Class B the last two seasons.

The Mendon girls varsity, also coached by Compson, is a three-time defending Section V champion and ranked No. 13 in the state, while Honeoye Falls-Lima is at No. 6. Compson said the support in the Pittsford community is “phenomenal.”

“The community is an active community, they understand running,” he said. “They support it. We’re not a ‘fringe’ sport in this community. It’s not uncommon at all to see our athletic director at cross country meets and to see other sports teams cheering us on. I think it breeds a sense of commitment to the program, not just from the athletes, but from everyone around them.”

Hess sensed a change among a few of the teammates he lines up shoulder-to-shoulder with.

“I think there are guys who realize they are varsity runners and that we have a shot at being a really fantastic team,” Hess said. “We saw them every day at Mendon Ponds this summer, when we had our unofficial captain practices. We hadn’t seen that before.”

The Vikings will see what they have for a lineup during the next three weekends, beginning with the Victor Invitational on Saturday and the Manhattan College High School Cross Country Invitational Oct. 10.

In between is the McQuaid Invitational, in which Mendon is a regular, and probably will remain one. Organizer of one of the largest meets in the country, McQuaid named the seeded race for medium-sized schools the Jason DeJoy Memorial.

DeJoy died unexpectedly in January 2014 at the age of 40. The married father of three daughters taught social studies at the Barker Road Middle School in Pittsford.

“His last year with us was his (and the team’s) first state title,” Burton said. “It really excited us that we could repeat the year after that. I’m going to admit that it was tough, but we pulled it out and that was a great confidence-booster for us after a tough loss.

“I feel like the main thing is that our team has a ton of brotherhood. We were able to bond together in tough situations. We have such a strong bond that to me, it seems like we’re impenetrable and that we can beat on, no matter what.”

Talking yourself into walking into a weight room on tired legs is one of those “little things” Burton referred to.

“Really, no one is on the JV here,” Burton said. “You are training, you are running and are expected to act like a varsity runner. If you are in our top 50, you are in our top seven.”

A quality cross country program like the one at Pittsford Mendon has a long-term plan.

The Vikings sometimes hold back today in order to be in a better position for tomorrow.

Pittsford Mendon coach Chris Compson knew weeks ago the Vikings boys team would be all about the McQuaid Invitational on Saturday, however.

The race is known as the Jason DeJoy Memorial, after the late Mendon cross country coach and father of three who died in January 2014 at the age of 40.

“On any given day, guys run great and on any given day, guys have off days,” Compson said. “I never like to approach a race saying you know, here’s the plan, here’s the tactic, here’s the measure. To some degree, it’s always lace ‘em up, race ‘em up and see where we go from there.

“McQuaid, the race is named after Jason (DeJoy), so we always want to show up there and do what we can. Last year, we came up two points short, so I think no matter what I say to the guys, they are ready to roll there.”

The Mendon boys, ranked No. 1 among Class B teams in the state, were ready to roll at Genesee Valley Park. Their point total of 84 was 15 less than runner-up Xavier’s, more than enough to make them winners of the seeded race for medium-sized schools.

“All of our guys are trying to focus on you know, being with the team and running strong as a team and trying to get those points overall,” Mendon senior Griffin Hess said. “I know we’re all trying to chase those individual spots as well, but ultimately the goal for everyone here was to come and win the DeJoy Memorial.”

It was out of this race that the day’s fastest time on the three-mile course came. Noah Affolder, a junior at Carthage in Section III or Syracuse region, finished in 14 minutes, 14.9 seconds, a record. Mendon sophomore Nathan Lawler led the Vikings (15:02.4) with his sixth-place finish, two ahead of Brighton junior Paul Dellinger.

“I actually couldn’t run it last year, so this is my first year in the varsity race,” Lawler said. “I got out very hard. I think the pace this year was much faster than it usually is. It definitely helped in my ending time.

“I thought it was really fast. The first mile, I couldn’t believe how fast we got out.”

In Mendon’s style, the Vikings won the team scoring with their performances outside of the top 10. Henry Burton, a senior, came in 14th, Hess and senior Isaac Goodman were 21st and 22nd and junior Casey Woodward 30th.

“We couldn’t quite pull out the win last year,” Burton said. “Not a lot of our guys had good races, myself included. I think I really stepped it up this year, despite these (shakes his head and laughs) horrendous conditions.

“We all really stepped it up this year and it just makes me happy, you know, to see not only myself, but my entire team running very, very well. It’s really great, especially these young guys. A sophomore running 15:03, that’s pretty fast.”

East Rochester senior Dawson Bathgate was also fast. No one finished ahead of the 10-time Section V class track and field champion in the boys seeded A or small schools race. Bathgate, for a time in cold and windy weather, was a contender for the Steve Prefontaine award won by Affolder, as the East Rochester Bomber crossed the line in 15:07.2.

McQuaid Invitational agate

The Charlie McMullen award for the fastest time by a boy at a Section V school went to Lawler. The girls equivalent, the Katie Harper Award, went to Rush-Henrietta junior Sammy Watson (17:35.4), who came in ninth during a highly competitive girls seeded AAA or large schools race.

“I went out faster than I thought,” Bathgate said. “I thought there would be some guys with me. There was only really one until about the mile mark, then he dropped off a little bit. I felt good at the mile. I didn’t think I was going as fast as I went.

“I just kept it up until the two-mile mark. It felt good, but then started to get some lactic acid, so I knew I had to just push until the end.”

Bathgate was 14th among Class D runners at the state cross country meet as a sophomore and was even closer to winning last year as the fourth-place finisher.

“I’m just hoping to win states,” Bathgate said. “I hate to say it so soon, but I want to win at states.”

An estimated 8,100 runners entered, slightly higher than last year’s total, according to race director Todd Stewart. The number of teams represented was down four at 246. Those squads bused in from around the state, Ohio, New Jersey, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania and Canada.

Pittsford running back Mack sidelined

Pittsford's Josh Mack, shown here against Aquinas in 2014, carried a personal-high 49 carries last Friday against Orchard Park.

Pittsford’s Josh Mack, shown here against Aquinas in 2014, carried a personal-high 49 carries last Friday against Orchard Park.

While the Pittsford Panthers are 5-0 and a clear contender for the Section V Class AA football championship, they will play at least the next two games without one of the area’s top high school running backs.

Josh Mack, a senior selected to the 2014 Democrat and Chronicle All-Greater Rochester team, said he expects to miss Pittsford’s final regular season games with a broken left hand. Mack said two screws were inserted during surgery Monday to help heal the metacarpal bone fracture.

“I’m out for 10 days,” Mack said. “I’ll be back for sectionals.”

Mack said the injury occurred Sept. 26 as he applied a stiff-arm on a Fairport defender. The Pittsford Sutherland senior decided to play Saturday against Orchard Park, a matchup of top-10 teams in the state rankings, with the idea he would soon be sidelined.

“I found out at halftime (of the game against Fairport) what happened but I was trying to talk to the coaches about having me go in,” Mack said. “They wouldn’t let me go in, so I told them I’d play against OP and just get surgery.

“I kept asking the doctor how long, and if I waited, but I think it’s the best time to get surgery.”

Pittsford defeated Orchard Park, of Section VI or Buffalo-region, 41-28, as Mack ran for 353 yards with four touchdowns on the huge total of 49 carries. Former Canandaigua running back Kaheem Gist set the Section V single-game rushing record at 449 yards on 39 attempts eight years ago.

“Right when I was told at the end of the game I thought, ‘People are going to think I’m crazy’,” Pittsford coach Keith Molinich said. “What I do as a running backs coach is ask the guys, ‘How you feeling, how you feeling?’ and he was saying ‘Give me the ball more, give the ball more.’

“I had no idea, I thought it was down in the low 30s someplace. Now we have a guy who keeps track of that, but I never thought to go ask him. So it’s clearly something we’ll keep an eye on in the future. We don’t want to drain a kid, but he had a night-and-a-half that night.”

Josh Mack

Mack said he would ask to carry the ball 40 times again, “if I had the opportunity.” It will be at least two games before that chance arrives again. Pittsford, No. 5 in the New York State Sportswriters Association state rankings released Wednesday, plays at Webster Thomas on Friday and at Penfield on Oct. 16.

“We knew going into the Orchard Park game that was going to be his last game for a couple of weeks,” Molinich said. “He embraced that, he was excited about that. We have quite a number of kids who can run the ball. Marquis Carter is an extremely capable young man and Michael DeLucia is as well.

“(We have) the kids who got time in the second part of that Fairport game, because Marquise wasn’t feeling great and Mikey wasn’t feeling great, Frank Imburgia and we had Aiden Whitely. So we have five capable running backs. You know, Josh clearly is at a different level, but we have guys who can win football games.”

This weekend is the final one of the Section V high school football regular season.

It appears that Irondequoit, the Section V Class A champion that reached the state semifinals, has recovered from an 0-2 start to get into this year’s playoffs. The Eagles play at Canandaigua, 2 p.m. Sat. Oct. 17.

Fairport at Webster Schroeder, 7 p.m. on Fri. Oct. 16. also is significant. A win for Fairport puts the Red Raiders in, otherwise the door opens for McQuaid.

Below are the final high school football coaches rankings. The Section V Tournaments begin next week.

Arguing with teammates in a huddle is a bad look for a football team most of the time, and the Rush-Henrietta Royal Comets did some of that during the regular season.

“Nah, it’s not normal stuff at all,” Rush-Henrietta senior receiver/defensive back Reggie Robinson said. “We just started that because the season was going bad.

“We lost to Pittsford (at homecoming), we lost to Victor,(then at Hilton, too). Our heads were down, but sectionals are a new season.”

Working together to complete a game-winning 84-yard drive in the sectionals is a much prettier picture, and the Royal Comets have done that, too.

Reggie Robinson scored on a 13-yard touchdown run up the middle of Rush-Henrietta’s line with 42 seconds remaining Friday night, that gave the Royal Comets a 35-28 win over previously undefeated Pittsford in a Section V Class AA first round playoff matchup.

The excited Royal Comets waited for the Pittsford Panthers to clear the sidelines, before they came over to yell with joy with their fans at Pittsford Sutherland High.

“Every year it’s different people, different kids,” Rush-Henrietta coach Joe Montesano said. “I would agree with you, we’ve had some adversity in terms of sticking together, at times.

“Not bad kids, these are great kids, but just learning how to play together and to pick each other up when things haven’t gone our way.”

The No. 6 Royal Comets (5-3) take their learned lessons and enthusiasm to Sahlen Stadium in Rochester for a semifinal against No. 2 Victor (8-0), 4 p.m. Nov. 1. Top-seed Aquinas (7-0) hosts No. 8 Fairport (4-3) 7 p.m. tonight.

No. 4 Hilton (7-1) defeated No. 5 East High/School of the Arts/Freddie Thomas (5-3) Friday night, also in the first round of the eight-team Class AA tournament.

“We were a 4-3 team coming into this,”’ Montesano said. “You know, but the three losses are to teams that had one loss (among them).”

Pittsford (7-1), the No. 3 seed, defeated Rush-Henrietta, 36-33, in Week 3.

“I think part of the process and learning is when you have adversity, how do you respond?” Montesano said. “We haven’t responded in the best ways, but tonight I’m really proud of our guys.

“They played really hard, and that’s what we talked about, just what if we stick together and play really hard when things don’t go our way.”

The Royal Comets took leads of 7-0, 21-13 and 28-21, but lost all of those advantages. Their eight-point lead in the second quarter disappeared after a 10-play, 80-yard touchdown drive by the Panthers and Riley Cotts two-point conversion reception.

Rush-Henrietta moved ahead again 28-21, with 7:02 remaining in the third quarter. Senior quarterback Jared Gerbino and Joseph Ortiz, who hooked up for a 72-yard touchdown pass during the first half, connected for a 10-yard score.

The Royal Comets had a chance to add to their seven-point lead early in the fourth quarter, but a 28-yard field goal attempt by Gerbino was no good. Mack then helped Pittsford even the score in spectacular fashion, as he weaved downfield during an 80-yard touchdown run. Alec Vaules kicked the extra-point attempt to tie the score at 28-28.

The Royal Comets were stopped on downs near midfield during their next possession, but moved from their own 16-yard line to win the game. Rush-Henrietta converted three third downs during the march.

“We prepared all week for that,” Gerbino said. “We had third-and-long in practice, so when it happens in a game, we just do what we do.

“They were dropping off deep in coverage, so we would just take it short. That was working a lot on third downs, that was great.”

McDonald carried a screen pass 32 yards on a third-and 10 during the game-winning drive. Gerbino later scrambled 14 yards near the Rush-Henrietta sidelines on third-and-13 at the Pittsford 35. Robinson’s touchdown came on first-and-goal, after an illegal procedure penalty pushed back the Royal Comets.

“We picked our heads up and did our jobs,” Robinson said.
